The Millfield Group is a boutique Commercial and Industrial property investment company based in Sydenham, Christchurch.

We welcome enquiries from Tenants and Commercial Real Estate (agents working on behalf of Tenants).

The Millfield Group.

The Millfield Group was established in 2004 as a partnership between the Smith and Butterfield Families.

The Group initially started developing pre-schools in Christchurch then turned its focus to restoring and reviving unloved and underdeveloped properties after the devastating earthquakes of 2010 and 2011.

The Millfield Group now has around 40 commercial and industrial tenants throughout Christchurch and Wellington. It also has its own team of quality tradesmen and subcontractors and is able to provide turn-key solutions for tenants.

Focus on long-term tenant relationships

We value our long-term tenant relationships. Where possible, we work with our tenants to meet their changing accommodation requirements. Matt or Sharon will always be available for a catch up.

Treat tenants as our business partners

We treat our tenants as our business partners and work towards mutually beneficial solutions. We promote our tenants and use their services.

Minimize Operating Expenses

Operating expenses are reduced through a hands-on property management approach.

Work in with Real Estate Agents

We have good relationships with many local commercial Real Estate Agents. We are happy for them to promote our property, introduce us to prospective tenants and provide us with investment opportunities.

Keep it local

Whenever possible we purchase our goods and services locally. We support our tenants, as well as local contractors, retailers and businesses.

Matt Butterfield

Managing Director

Matt established the Millfield Group back in 2004 after working as a share broker for Goldman Sachs JBWere, and an investment advisor prior to that.

After completing a BCom in Finance and Accounting at Otago University, Matt started in the property game with his wife Kate buying old houses, tidying them up and renting them out before venturing into Commercial Property. Matt enjoys the challenge of converting earthquake-damaged and unloved buildings into modern work spaces as well as working directly with tenants and assisting them with their property requirements.

Outside work, Matt enjoys family time in Akaroa, coaching and supporting his kid's sport, hunting, fishing and diving.

Sharon Blackburn

Property Manager

Sharon joined The Millfield Group in October 2019. She has a wealth of Property Management experience having graduated from Lincoln University in 1996 with a BCom in Valuation & Property Management. Sharon has worked as a Property Manager with a number of Christchurch Real Estate companies including Colliers International and CBRE where she was an Associate Director of Asset Services. Prior to starting her employment with The Millfield Group she worked the last 10 years with Carter Group being involved with a varied management portfolio and a number of central city Christchurch developments.

Sharon enjoys working for a small local company that focuses on a hands-on relationship with its tenants.

When Sharon is not in the office you will find her on the farm in Hororata with her husband and two teenage sons or hiking around the Canterbury High Country.
